Dental crowns are one of the most common procedures in dental tourism — straightforward enough for a one-trip visit, expensive enough in home markets to justify the travel cost for multiple units, and well-suited to the standard dental tourism format. This guide covers the cost picture, materials, and planning considerations.

Crown materials: what you’re choosing between

Monolithic zirconia (the current standard)

Full zirconia crowns — milled from a single block of zirconia ceramic — are the current mainstream choice for most crown indications. They are strong (fracture resistance far higher than E.max or PFM), tooth-coloured, and do not chip because there is no layered porcelain to fracture.

Best for: Posterior (back) teeth where strength is the priority; patients with bruxism (grinding); full-smile makeovers where uniformity matters.

Aesthetic limitation: Slightly less translucent than E.max — looks slightly more opaque than natural teeth under bright light. Acceptable for most patients; may be noticeable in the most aesthetic front-tooth cases.

E.max (lithium disilicate)

E.max crowns offer superior aesthetics — the material transmits light more similarly to natural enamel. For front teeth visible in a smile, E.max is often the preferred material.

Best for: Upper anterior teeth (front 6 to 8 teeth) where aesthetic priority is highest.

Limitation: Not as strong as zirconia; not recommended for patients with bruxism or for posterior teeth taking high biting loads.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM)

PFM crowns have a metal substructure with a porcelain veneer on the outside. The technology is 40+ years old. The visible limitation: a grey metal margin becomes visible at the gum line as gums recede with age. Not recommended for new crown placements when zirconia or E.max are available at competitive prices.

Ask any clinic to confirm they are offering zirconia or E.max, not PFM, for any front teeth.

How many crowns make sense for a trip?

The fixed travel overhead (flights, accommodation, time) makes a single crown trip marginal for most patients. As crown count increases, the net saving per unit improves significantly.

Crown countTurkey total cost (example)UK equivalentNet saving after £300 flight + £400 hotel
1$350 (£280)£1,500£820
4$1,400 (£1,120)£6,000£5,180
8$2,800 (£2,240)£12,000£10,060
16 (full smile)$5,600 (£4,480)£22,000£17,820

For a full smile makeover involving 16 crowns, the saving versus UK pricing is substantial even after all travel costs. A single crown is worth combining with other treatment planned on the same trip.

What to confirm before booking

  1. Crown material by name: “Zirconia” or “E.max” — not “ceramic” or “porcelain” which are ambiguous
  2. CAD/CAM milling: Confirm the clinic mills crowns in-house with CAD/CAM technology (same or next-day fabrication) or sends to a lab (which requires a longer stay or a second trip for final cementation)
  3. Temporary crown: If the final crown is fabricated by an external lab, a temporary crown is placed first. Confirm whether temporary crowns are included and how long you need to wait for final cementation
  4. Shade matching: Confirm a dedicated shade selection consultation is included for cosmetic cases
  5. Warranty: The standard warranty on dental crowns is 1 to 5 years. Ask for written terms.

One-trip vs two-trip protocols

Many dental tourism crown cases can be completed in a single trip when the clinic has in-house CAD/CAM milling (CEREC or similar systems). Same-day or next-day crown fabrication means:

  • Day 1: preparation, digital scan, shade selection
  • Day 2: crown fitting and cementation

A trip of 3 to 4 days covers this comfortably.

If the clinic uses an external dental lab: fabrication takes 3 to 5 working days. This either requires a longer stay (7 to 10 days) or a two-trip protocol — preparation on trip 1, cementation on trip 2. For patients who can manage the logistics, the two-trip model is fine; confirm the lab turnaround time before booking to avoid surprises.
